50 KB is a document-photo budget, not a photograph budget
At 50 KB you are firmly in identity-document territory. It is enough for a head-and-shoulders photo at around 400 by 500 pixels to look clean, and it is not enough for a scenic photo at full resolution to survive intact.
That is deliberate on the part of whoever set the limit. A form that asks for 50 KB is asking for a face, not a picture — and the compressor works with that assumption by trimming dimensions before it destroys detail.
The trade-off you are making
Going from 100 KB to 50 KB does not halve the visible quality; JPEG degrades unevenly. The first thing to go is fine texture — skin, fabric weave, foliage. Edges and colour hold up much longer, which is why a face still reads correctly at 50 KB while a photo of a forest turns to mush.
If your image is a scan of text rather than a photograph, 50 KB behaves differently again. Sharp black-on-white edges are expensive in JPEG, so a text scan may need its dimensions reduced substantially. For documents, scanning in greyscale before compressing helps more than any setting here.
Getting a good 50 KB result
Start from the largest, cleanest copy you have rather than from an image that has already been compressed once. Re-compressing an already-compressed JPEG stacks artefacts on top of artefacts, and the result at 50 KB will look noticeably worse than compressing the original once.
- Crop first, compress second. Cropping away background is free quality — those pixels no longer need bytes.
- If the form allows it, upload as JPG rather than PNG. A photographic image in PNG at 50 KB will have to lose a lot of pixels to get there.
- Check the result line. If it reports a large dimension reduction, consider whether a slightly larger target is acceptable.
Questions people ask
My photo comes back much smaller in dimensions. Why?
Because at 50 KB there was no other way. The tool lowers quality first and only shrinks dimensions when the lowest usable quality still overshoots the target. Starting from a cropped image usually avoids it.
Can I get exactly 50 KB rather than under it?
The tool aims for the largest file that still fits under the limit, so results usually land in the 45 to 50 KB band. Forms specify a maximum, so being just under is what you want.
Does this work on an iPhone HEIC photo?
Only if your browser can decode HEIC, which Safari on a recent iPhone can and most desktop browsers cannot. If it fails, share the photo as JPEG from the Photos app first, then compress.
Will the compressed file still have my location data in it?
No. Re-encoding through a canvas drops EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates and camera model. That is a side effect rather than the purpose, but it is a useful one for a photo you are about to send to a stranger.
